A website designed for that process gets recommended. A pretty website that hides its answers inside vague marketing copy stays invisible. Traditional SEO asked whether Google could rank your page in a list of blue links. AI search adds an extraction layer on top: the engine still has to find and index your page, but then it has to pull a clean, self-contained answer out of it and decide your brand is credible enough to attribute that answer to.
The shift matters because Australians are now searching this way in serious numbers. Research house Telsyte reported in June 2026 that Australia’s AI user base has surged past 17 million people, with four in five engaging monthly and 12 per cent now naming AI tools as their primary way of finding information online, up from 5 per cent a year earlier (Telsyte, June 2026). Making your website AI friendly is not a separate project bolted onto SEO. It is a set of design and build decisions, most of which also make the site faster, clearer and more usable for humans. Step 1: Make sure AI crawlers can actually reach your content
Nothing else matters if the machine cannot read the page. The single most common reason a website is invisible to AI is that its important content only appears after JavaScript runs, or the crawler is blocked outright. Fix the foundation first.
- Server-render your key content. If your headings, answers and body copy only load after client-side JavaScript executes, many AI crawlers will see an empty shell. Ensure the meaningful text is present in the raw HTML. WordPress with a well-built theme handles this naturally; heavy single-page-app builds often do not.
- Do not block the AI bots you want. Check your
robots.txt. GPTBot (OpenAI), Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot are the crawlers that feed the major assistants. Blocking them removes you from those answers entirely. Decide deliberately which to allow. - Get indexed in Bing, not just Google. ChatGPT’s web results lean heavily on Bing’s index, so a site missing from Bing Webmaster Tools is missing from a huge slice of AI search. Submit and verify in both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Keep the page fast and stable. Core Web Vitals still matter. A slow, layout-shifting page is harder to crawl reliably and signals low quality. Aim for quick server response, compressed images and minimal render-blocking scripts.

Step 2: Structure every important page to answer questions directly
Once the crawler can read the page, structure decides whether it can extract an answer. AI engines reward content that is organised the way a question-and-answer session is organised: a clear question, then an immediate, self-contained answer.
Apply this pattern to your priority pages:
- Open with the answer. The first two sentences under each heading should answer the question that heading implies, in plain language, before you expand. Lead, do not build up.
- Use question-shaped headings. Turn “Our Process” into “How does the web design process work?”. Turn “Services” into “What web design services do you offer?”. The heading tells the engine which sub-question this block answers.
- Keep paragraphs short. Two to four sentences. Each block should be liftable as a standalone answer without needing the paragraph before it.
- Format for extraction. Use comparison tables when explaining a choice, numbered lists for processes, and bulleted criteria for checklists. These structures are easy for a model to lift verbatim.

Step 3: Add structured data so machines understand what your content means
Structured data, or schema markup, is code that labels your content so a machine knows a phone number is a phone number, a review is a review, and a question is a question. It removes ambiguity, and AI engines strongly favour content they can parse without guessing.
The schema types that matter most for an AI friendly website are:
- Organization and LocalBusiness: your name, address, phone, service area and opening hours as machine-readable facts. Essential for local queries like “web designer near Broadbeach”.
- FAQPage: marks up question-and-answer sections so they can be surfaced directly. This is why a genuine FAQ section is worth building on key pages.
- Article: with author, datePublished and dateModified, so blog and guide content is attributed and dated.
- Product and Review: for ecommerce, exposing price, availability and ratings cleanly to the engine.
- Person: for author profiles, with sameAs links to public profiles, which strengthens the trust signals discussed in Step 4.
Use JSON-LD, the format Google recommends, and build it against the schema.org vocabulary, then validate it. Google’s own structured data documentation is the authoritative reference for which properties each type needs. On WordPress, a plugin like RankMath can generate much of this automatically, but it still needs to be configured correctly and checked against your real business details.

Step 4: Build the trust and authority signals AI engines look for
AI engines will not cite a source they do not trust, and trust is built from signals of a real, credible business. This is where many websites fall down: the technical structure is fine, but there is nothing telling the model this is a genuine, experienced operator rather than a thin content mill.
Strengthen these signals across your site:
- Named authors with real credentials. Content attributed to a named expert with a bio and linked public profiles is more citable than anonymous copy.
- Consistent business details everywhere. Your name, address and phone should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile and directories. Inconsistency confuses entity resolution.
- Genuine, specific detail. Real project examples, real suburbs, real numbers and real client outcomes. Generic “we deliver quality solutions” copy is treated as commodity content and rarely cited.
- External corroboration. Reviews, mentions and links from other reputable sites tell the engine other people vouch for you.
For a Gold Coast business, local specificity is a genuine advantage. Naming Broadbeach, Southport, Surfers Paradise, Robina and Burleigh Heads, and describing the actual services you deliver there, gives an AI engine the concrete entities it needs to match you to a local query. Vague national copy cannot compete for “near me” style questions.

Step 5: Write content that answers the sub-questions, not just the keyword
AI engines fan a single query out into many sub-questions, then assemble an answer from whichever sources cover them best. To be AI friendly, one deep page should answer the whole cluster of related questions rather than spreading thin pages across each variation.
For example, a business web design page should answer, within one page: what the service includes, how the process works, how long it takes, what platforms you build on, how you handle mobile and speed, and how you make the site show up in AI search. Give each sub-question its own clearly labelled section. This depth is what separates a page that gets cited from one that gets skipped.
Crucially, do not create a separate near-duplicate page for every keyword variation. Google now treats page-per-query-variation as scaled content abuse, and it dilutes rather than builds authority. Step 6: Get your technical foundation right (speed, mobile, accessibility)
Technical quality is a trust signal in its own right. A site that is fast, mobile-first and accessible is easier for crawlers to process and signals a professionally maintained business. Focus on the fundamentals that both humans and machines reward.
- Core Web Vitals. Fast loading, quick interactivity and visual stability. Compress images, defer non-critical scripts and use quality hosting.
- Mobile-first design. The majority of AI-assisted searches start on a phone. A responsive layout is non-negotiable.
- Accessibility (WCAG). Descriptive alt text, logical heading order and sufficient contrast help assistive technology and crawlers alike parse your content.

The core principles are the same for every site, but the priorities shift with the business type. Matching your effort to how your customers actually ask questions is what turns a generic checklist into real visibility.
For a service business website, the highest-value work is local entity clarity and question-based service pages. Name your suburbs, describe exactly what you do in each, and mark up your LocalBusiness details so “near me” and “best in [suburb]” queries can match you. A Gold Coast trades or professional-services site lives or dies on how clearly it states who it serves and where.
For an ecommerce website, Product and Review schema do the heavy lifting. Clean, structured product data, accurate availability and pricing, and genuine reviews let an AI engine surface your products directly when someone asks for a recommendation or comparison. Thin product descriptions copied from a supplier feed are the ecommerce equivalent of commodity content, and they rarely get cited.
For a content or publishing site, Article and Person schema plus demonstrable author expertise are what build citability. In every case the pattern holds: identify the real questions your audience asks, answer them clearly and specifically on the right page, and mark that content up so a machine can trust and lift it.
How do you know if your website is AI friendly?
You test it. The most direct check is to ask the AI engines themselves the questions your customers would ask, and see whether you appear and whether the details are correct. Do this deliberately rather than assuming.
- Ask the assistants. Put buyer-style questions to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, such as “best [your service] in [your suburb]”. Note whether you are named and whether the facts are right.
- Check the raw HTML. View the page source or use a rendering tool to confirm your key content is present without JavaScript.
- Validate your schema. Run your pages through Google’s Rich Results Test to confirm your structured data is valid and complete.
- Confirm indexing. Verify the page is indexed in both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Audit for commodity content. Read your key pages and ask honestly whether they contain specific, verifiable facts or just generic marketing language.
What to avoid: chasing tactics that sound clever but do nothing. Google has been explicit that files like llms.txt, arbitrary “chunking” and AI-specific content rewriting do not influence Search. The durable work is the same fundamentals that have always mattered, applied with AI extraction in mind.
