Windeyer Continuous Hinges: Turning Rankings Into Revenue

Stay ahead with the latest tips, trends, and insights from the Titan Blue team, straight from the studio in Broadbeach.

Let's Discuss Your Business Needs

Book a Virtual Visit

In October 2023, Windeyer Continuous Hinges already ranked position one on Google for seven of its own product terms. It was also sitting 8th for piano hinge and 4th for piano hinges, the two searches that carry almost all the volume in its category, and the website was pulling 720 users a month. By 2026 the company ranks position one for piano hinge, piano hinges and continuous hinges, the terms that define the entire category, its average search position across the whole site has moved from 19.7 to 11.7, and its online orders are up 33% year on year with revenue up 63%. This is the case study where the traffic barely moved and the business grew anyway.

That last sentence is the point. Most agency case studies lead with a traffic graph. This one cannot, and it is more useful because of it.

The short answer

Between 2023 and 2026, Titan Blue took a specialist Australian hinge manufacturer from a strong but narrow search position to a page that reliably wins the searches its buyers actually make. Specifically:

  • Average Google position improved from 19.7 to 11.7 across the entire site
  • Position one for piano hinge, piano hinges and continuous hinges, the three highest-volume terms in the category
  • Top of page one across the specification-led variants, including piano hinge heavy duty, heavy duty piano hinge and aluminium piano hinge
  • Online orders up 33% and revenue up 63% comparing the first half of 2026 against the first half of 2025
  • Average order value up 23% over the same period
  • One pillar article earning 182 clicks from 14,926 impressions at position 7.3, outperforming the homepage on impressions
  • 276 pages earning search impressions, up from 262, across a 1,742 query footprint
  • Click-through rate improved from 1.61% to 1.85% while impressions held
  • 4,317 organic clicks and 265,213 impressions across the sixteen months Search Console retains

Total organic clicks over the two comparison windows were essentially flat, 1,614 then 1,650. We are not going to dress that up. The interesting question is why the business grew 63% anyway.

Windeyer Continuous Hinges, Australian made continuous hinges
Windeyer Continuous Hinges, an Australian manufacturer in a genuinely specialist category.

Act one: a strong start with a ceiling on it

Windeyer manufactures continuous hinges, also called piano hinges, in Australia. Stainless steel, aluminium, pre-punched, custom lengths, made to order for fabricators, sign makers, transport operators and industrial clients. It is a genuinely specialist business in a genuinely small category.

The October 2023 report shows a company that had already done a lot right. From that report:

Metric October 2023
Website users 720
Page views 3,983
Average session duration 7 minutes 8 seconds
Engagement rate 55.85%
Keywords ranking on Google 20
Google Business Profile impressions 152
Google Business Profile interactions 71
Google Ads impressions 7,021
Sales from Google Ads that month 2

The report noted a 100% increase in active user sessions since the launch of the new website. The average session duration of over seven minutes is remarkable and tells you exactly who was visiting: buyers with a technical specification in hand, reading dimensions and gauge charts, not casual browsers.

And the rankings were genuinely strong. In October 2023 Windeyer held position one for:

  • australian made hinges
  • australian made custom hinges
  • australian made hinge products
  • continuous hinges
  • custom hinge experts
  • pre-punched stainless steel hinges
  • reliable custom hinges

Plus position two for custom hinges, custom hinge manufacturer and custom butt hinges.

So what was the problem?

Look at the same report’s other rows. Piano hinge: 8th. Piano hinges: 4th. Industrial hinges: 22nd. Integrated hinges: 42nd. And australian made hinged signs, hinged sign solutions and bunnings piano hinges were not found at all.

That is the ceiling, and it is one of the most common traps in B2B search. Windeyer dominated the terms that describe how the company thinks about itself, and lost the terms that describe how its buyers search.

An Australian fabricator who needs a long stainless hinge does not type “australian made hinge products”. They type piano hinge. That single term generates over 6,400 impressions for Windeyer in a six month window today, more than any other query on the site. Ranking 8th for it in 2023 meant appearing at the bottom of page one, below the marketplaces and the big-box retailers, on the one search that mattered most. Today Windeyer sits above all of them.

Ranking first for terms nobody searches is not a win. It just looks like one on a report.

Act two: the diagnosis

Three things were true at once.

One: the category has a hard volume ceiling. There are only so many people in Australia searching for continuous hinges in any given month. No amount of content will change that. Any strategy promising Windeyer tenfold traffic growth would have been fiction. This is the honest constraint of specialist B2B manufacturing, and pretending otherwise wastes the client’s money.

Two: the valuable terms were being lost to generalists. Piano hinge searches were being answered by hardware retailers and marketplaces that stock a couple of sizes, not by the Australian manufacturer that makes them to order. Windeyer had the better answer and the worse ranking.

Three: the site did not answer the buying questions. A fabricator choosing a hinge needs to know gauge, material, knuckle configuration, hole pattern, load rating, corrosion behaviour and length availability. Product pages listed specifications. Nothing on the site explained how to choose.

So the strategy was not to chase traffic. It was to own the small number of searches that produce orders, and make the site the reference document for the entire category.

For a business with a capped audience, that is the correct objective. Ten more of the right visitors is worth more than a thousand of the wrong ones.

Custom lengths, gauges and hole patterns. The buyer searches for the product, not the company description.

Act three: what we built

A definitive pillar resource for the category

The centrepiece is a complete Australian guide to piano hinges: materials, gauges, lengths, hole patterns, applications, selection criteria, the differences between continuous, piano and butt hinges, and how to specify the right one for a job.

That single page now earns 182 organic clicks from 14,926 impressions at an average position of 7.3. It generates more search impressions than the homepage. For a specialist manufacturer, one properly built pillar page outperforms a hundred thin ones, because the buyer reads it, trusts it, and then buys from the company that wrote it.

A weekly publishing rhythm, sized to the category

Windeyer publishes one long-form article a week. Not three, as our hospitality clients do. In a category with this much technical depth and this little search volume, three articles a week would produce filler, and filler damages a technical brand.

The topics track real applications: truck and trailer signage, sign fabrication, drilling thick stainless, integrated hinge assemblies, legislative changes affecting transport signage. Each one targets a specific application the buyer already has in front of them.

Over the programme the site has grown to 276 pages earning search impressions across 1,742 distinct queries.

Answer Engine Optimisation, which matters more here than almost anywhere

Technical B2B research is exactly the kind of question people now ask an AI assistant rather than a search engine. “What gauge piano hinge do I need for a heavy steel gate?” is a question AI answers directly.

So every article was built for AEO and GEO:

  • Answer first. The question in the heading is answered in the opening lines, because that is the text an AI engine extracts and cites.
  • Fan-out structure. A query like “heavy duty piano hinge” fans out into which material, what thickness, what length, what load, who makes them in Australia. Each sub-question gets its own heading and its own direct answer.
  • Specific and entity-rich. Actual millimetre dimensions, actual material grades, actual hole spacings. Vague technical content is worthless to a fabricator and invisible to an AI engine.

For a manufacturer, this is a genuine advantage. Windeyer knows things about hinge manufacture that no content farm can invent, and AI engines are increasingly good at telling the difference.

Instant indexing and internal structure

Every publish is pushed to Google’s Indexing API and IndexNow so it is discovered in minutes. Internal linking channels authority from the article library into the product pages that take orders, which is the step most content programmes forget entirely.

The results

1. Position one for the terms that define the category

This is the whole objective, and here is the before and after.

Query October 2023 Today
piano hinge 8th 1st
piano hinges 4th 1st
continuous hinges not tracked 1st
piano hinge heavy duty not tracked top of page one
heavy duty piano hinge not tracked top of page one
aluminium piano hinge not tracked top of page one
stainless steel piano hinge not tracked page one

Piano hinge alone carries around 1,600 searches a month in Australia and generates over 6,400 impressions for Windeyer in a six month window, more than any other query on the site. Going from 8th to first on that one term changes the economics of the whole channel, because the top organic result takes a multiple of the clicks that the eighth does.

The 2023 tracker followed 20 keywords, mostly variations on “australian made” and “custom”. The 2026 footprint is 1,742 queries, and the ones now delivering orders are the commercial, specification-led searches a buyer makes when they are about to place an order. Heavy duty, aluminium, stainless steel: these are people who know what they need and are choosing a supplier.

2. Average position improved from 19.7 to 11.7

Across the whole site, comparing the first half of the programme with the most recent six months. That is the number that explains everything else. The site is not being seen by more people. It is being seen in a better place by the same people, and better placement in a specification-led category means the buyer clicks through and reads.

Click-through rate rose from 1.61% to 1.85% over the same period. Modest in isolation, meaningful when the audience is finite.

Integrated hinge assemblies for fabricators
Orders grew 33% and revenue 63% while organic clicks stayed flat.

3. Orders up 33%, revenue up 63%

Comparing the first half of 2026 against the first half of 2025, taken directly from the store:

Store metric H1 2025 H1 2026 Change
Orders 70 93 +33%
Revenue baseline up 63% +63%
Average order value baseline up 23% +23%

This is the part that matters, and it is the reason this case study exists despite flat click numbers.

Orders grew faster than traffic, and revenue grew faster than orders. That combination only happens for one reason: the visitors arriving are better qualified and buying more per transaction. Ranking on heavy duty piano hinge and aluminium piano hinge brings a fabricator with a job specification and a quantity, not someone looking for a small hinge for a cupboard door.

Traffic is a vanity metric in a niche category. Order value is not.

4. Search Console reality check

Metric Apr to Oct 2025 Feb to Aug 2026
Clicks 1,614 1,650
Average position 19.7 11.7
Queries ranking 1,792 1,742
Pages earning impressions 262 276
Click-through rate 1.61% 1.85%

Clicks up 2%. We are showing you that row rather than hiding it.

The honest caveats

Organic click volume is essentially flat. In a market this small, that is close to the ceiling. Growth in this category comes from converting the finite audience better, not from finding more of them. If an agency tells a specialist manufacturer it can triple their organic traffic, ask which searches, and then check the volume on those searches.

Rankings are a live position, not a permanent one. The category terms are held against national retailers and marketplaces with far larger domains, and holding first place requires the content and technical work to continue. Some longer specification variants, such as stainless steel piano hinge, sit further down page one and are still being worked on.

Search Console reports an averaged position, not a live one. The site-wide 19.7 to 11.7 figure below is Google’s average across every query, device, location and result type, which is always more conservative than where a term actually ranks on a live search. Both numbers are true and they measure different things.

Some of the revenue growth is not attributable to search. Windeyer sells through multiple channels and has its own customer relationships. What we can say with confidence is that the search programme took the site to position one on the exact terms buyers use, and that orders and average order value both rose materially over the same period.

Google Business Profile is a minor channel here. Impressions have held around 280 a month. For a national B2B manufacturer that ships everywhere, local search is not the lever it is for a restaurant, and we have not pretended otherwise or spent the budget there.

Australian made, made to order. The specialist knowledge is the search asset.

What other specialist manufacturers should take from this

Rank for how buyers search, not how you describe yourself. In 2023 Windeyer was position one for “australian made hinge products” and 8th for “piano hinge”. One of those descriptions is written by the marketing team and one is typed by the customer. Only the second one pays, and winning it took deliberate work.

Judge a niche programme on order value, not sessions. If your total addressable search audience is a few thousand people a month, traffic growth is the wrong scoreboard. Watch qualified visits, order volume and average order value.

One authoritative pillar page beats fifty thin ones. Windeyer’s piano hinge guide out-impresses the homepage. Technical buyers reward depth, and so does Google.

Match publishing cadence to the category. Weekly is right for technical B2B. Forcing three a week would produce padding, and padding erodes exactly the technical credibility you are trying to build.

Your specialist knowledge is the asset. A manufacturer knows things about its product that no content agency and no AI can fabricate. Publishing that knowledge is the most defensible search strategy available to you, and it is the one AI engines increasingly reward.

Keep the old reports. Google Search Console holds sixteen months. Without Windeyer’s October 2023 report, the fact that they were 8th for piano hinge before we started would simply be unprovable today.

Frequently asked questions

How long did it take?
Movement on the piano hinge family of terms began within the first two to three quarters, position one on the core terms took longer, and the commercial impact followed as those rankings matured. Technical B2B is slower than local search because the competing pages are often established retailer domains, but it is also more durable once won.

Does SEO work for a very small niche?
Yes, but the scoreboard changes. You will not get large traffic growth because the audience does not exist. You get a much larger share of a small, high-value audience. Windeyer’s clicks grew 2% while orders grew 33% and revenue grew 63%. That is what success looks like in a niche.

Why publish weekly instead of daily?
Because the category has finite genuine topics and a technical audience that punishes filler. Cadence should be set by how much real substance you can produce, not by an arbitrary content quota.

How important are pillar pages?
For a technical product, critical. Windeyer’s single piano hinge guide earns more search impressions than its homepage and ranks first for the category’s most contested term. It also functions as a sales tool, because prospects read it before enquiring.

Is content marketing still worth it now that AI answers technical questions?
For a manufacturer it is more valuable, not less. AI engines need authoritative sources for technical specification questions, and a real Australian manufacturer publishing real specifications is exactly the sort of source they cite. The businesses building that depth now will be the ones recommended by default.

The bottom line

In October 2023, Windeyer Continuous Hinges ranked first for seven terms that described the company and 8th for the one term its buyers actually type.

Today it ranks position one for piano hinge, piano hinges and continuous hinges, its average position across the site has improved from 19.7 to 11.7, and its online orders are up 33% with revenue up 63% and average order value up 23%.

The traffic graph is nearly flat. The business grew regardless, because the strategy was never about volume. It was about winning the small number of searches that end in an order.
