AEO Website Design Checklist 2026: The Complete Build Guide

An AEO website design checklist for 2026 covers seven areas: crawlable technical foundations, answer-first content structure, schema markup, entity and authority signals, Core Web Vitals performance, accessibility, and AI visibility measurement. A site that ticks all seven is readable by both a human visitor and an AI system such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, which decide whether to cite it. Miss even one area and the whole page can become invisible to answer engines, no matter how good the writing is.

Google’s own guidance is blunt about this: AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on the same Search index as classic organic results. There is no separate “AI algorithm” to game. AEO is not a bolt-on tactic, it is what good SEO and good web design already look like when you take structure, machine readability and answer clarity seriously. This checklist walks through what that means at the build level, not the content-marketing level, because the two are inseparable: an AI engine cannot cite a page it cannot parse.

What is an AEO website design checklist?

An AEO website design checklist is a build-stage audit that confirms a website is structurally ready to be found, understood and quoted by AI-powered search tools. It sits underneath content strategy, in the code, the markup and the information architecture. A page can have excellent copy and still fail every item on this checklist if the site itself is slow, unstructured or blocked from AI crawlers.

This checklist follows on from Titan Blue’s earlier guide on how to make your website AI friendly, which covers the broader step-by-step process; this article goes deeper on the specific build-stage items to check off.

The checklist splits into two layers. The first is retrievability: can an AI system’s crawler reach, render and parse the page at all? The second is extractability: once it is on the page, can the system lift a clean, self-contained answer out of a paragraph or table without stitching together fragments from three different places? Both layers need to pass before authority signals or schema markup make any difference.

Foundations: is your website crawlable by AI systems?

If you are planning a new build rather than auditing an existing site, start with our guide to AI ready website design in Australia, then return to this checklist to verify the finished build.

Before anything else, confirm the site is not accidentally blocking the crawlers that feed AI answer engines. This is the single most common failure Titan Blue finds during a new client’s AI Ready Check, and it is a five-minute fix once found.

  • robots.txt access. Check that GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Googlebot are not disallowed. Many WordPress security plugins block “unknown” bots by default.
  • No accidental noindex. A staging-site noindex tag left live after launch is common on WordPress and Shopify migrations, and it silently removes a page from both classic Search and AI retrieval.
  • XML sitemap is current. Submit it in Google Search Console and keep it updated automatically; RankMath and Yoast do this by default on WordPress.
  • JavaScript-rendered content is server-side rendered or pre-rendered. If key copy only appears after a client-side JavaScript framework runs, some crawlers will never see it.
  • Canonical tags point to the right URL, especially on ecommerce sites with filtered or paginated category pages.

None of this is new. It is the same technical SEO discipline Titan Blue has applied to Gold Coast websites since 2001, in Broadbeach, Southport, Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads and Robina alike. What has changed is the cost of getting it wrong: a blocked page used to lose organic rankings, now it also loses any chance of being the source behind a Google AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer.

Content structure: writing pages AI engines can extract

An AI system decomposes a query into sub-questions and looks for the page that answers each one cleanly, a process called query fan-out. Structuring content around this pattern is the single highest-leverage item on the checklist.

  1. Answer the core question in the first two or three sentences of the page or section, before any context-setting.
  2. Give every sub-question its own heading. If a reader would naturally ask “how long does this take”, “what does it cost to get right” (in scope, not price) or “what tools do I need”, each deserves its own H2 or H3, answered immediately underneath it.
  3. Keep paragraphs to two to four sentences. A wall of text cannot be lifted as a standalone answer; a tight paragraph can.
  4. Use tables for comparisons and lists for criteria or steps. Both are more extractable than prose for a language model summarising a page.
  5. Avoid front-loaded scene-setting. “In today’s digital landscape” style openers push the actual answer further from the top of the page, which both human readers and AI summarisers penalise.

Structured data and schema markup checklist

Schema markup is not required for AI features to work, but it removes ambiguity for any system parsing the page, and it still earns rich results in classic Search. The schema.org vocabulary is the shared standard behind almost all of it.

Schema type Where to use it Why it matters for AEO
Organization / LocalBusiness Homepage, contact page Confirms who is behind the answer, which feeds entity recognition
FAQPage Any page with a genuine Q&A section Turns questions into machine-readable answer pairs
BreadcrumbList Every interior page Clarifies site architecture and topical hierarchy
Product Ecommerce product pages Surfaces price, availability and reviews directly to AI shopping features
Article / BlogPosting Blog and news content Signals content type; avoid duplicating with a conflicting Article variant
Person Author or team bios Supports E-E-A-T style authorship signals

One caution from experience: schema conflicts are easy to introduce without noticing. When Titan Blue audited its own blog’s schema output in August 2026, every post was emitting NewsArticle instead of the intended BlogPosting type. The cause was not the SEO plugin’s article-type setting, which already read correctly, but a separate News Sitemap module silently overriding it site-wide. Turning that single module off fixed every post at once. The lesson for any WordPress build: verify what schema actually renders on the live page, not just what a settings screen says it should render, because plugins can silently conflict with each other.

Entity and authority signals checklist

Authority signals take longer to build than a schema fix but they compound. A site that consistently reinforces who is behind it, where it operates and what it has actually done gives an AI system far more to work with than a page of unattributed advice.

AI systems favour sources that are unambiguously “someone”, not an anonymous page of text. Entity clarity is a design and content decision as much as a technical one.

  • Consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across the website, Google Business Profile and directories. Titan Blue’s own listing reads Suite 140, 10 Albert Avenue, Broadbeach QLD 4218, matched exactly everywhere it appears.
  • A real About page naming founders, history and location, not a generic paragraph. Vague “we are a team of experts” copy gives an AI system nothing concrete to cite.
  • Author bylines on expertise content, with a bio page linking back to their credentials.
  • External citations and mentions from genuinely relevant sources: industry directories, local press, supplier or partner pages. Google explicitly warns against chasing inauthentic mentions purely for AI visibility; earn them the same way you would earn a backlink.
  • Reviews displayed on-site, linked to a live source such as Google Business Profile, not screenshots.

Core Web Vitals and technical performance checklist

Performance problems tend to hide until traffic grows, which is exactly when an AI-driven referral spike would otherwise convert. Auditing Core Web Vitals before scaling content output avoids finding out about a slow mobile template after it has already cost visibility.

Page experience has not stopped mattering because AI answers exist. Core Web Vitals, Google’s set of real-user speed and stability metrics, remain part of the same index that AI Overviews draw from.

Metric What it measures Target
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) How fast the main content loads Under 2.5 seconds
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) Responsiveness to clicks and taps Under 200 milliseconds
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) Visual stability while loading Under 0.1

Common causes on Gold Coast small business sites: oversized hero images on WordPress and WooCommerce builds, render-blocking plugins stacked from years of ad hoc additions, and video backgrounds with no lazy loading. A clean Elementor build with compressed imagery and a caching layer usually clears all three targets without custom development.

Accessibility checklist: why WCAG compliance overlaps with AEO

Accessibility and AI readability solve the same underlying problem: making content legible to something other than a sighted human reading in context. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) require descriptive alt text, logical heading order, sufficient colour contrast and keyboard navigation. Every one of those also helps a screen reader, a search crawler and an AI summariser parse the page the same way.

  • Alt text describes what is actually in the image, not just the filename or a keyword stuffed in for SEO.
  • Headings follow a strict H1 to H2 to H3 hierarchy with no skipped levels.
  • Forms have labelled fields, and buttons describe their action (“Book a Free Strategy Call” rather than “Click Here”).
  • Colour contrast meets at least WCAG AA on body text and buttons.

Measurement: tracking AI visibility in Search Console and GA4

Measurement is the checklist item most sites skip, mostly because it does not feel like “building” anything. It matters just as much: without it, there is no way to tell whether the crawlability fixes, the schema markup and the content restructuring actually moved the needle, or whether a competitor’s answer is still winning the citation for the same query.

Google added a Generative AI performance report inside Search Console, breaking out impressions and clicks that came specifically from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Every property needs to be opted into generative AI features to be eligible for that reporting, and to be counted at all.

  1. Confirm the property is opted in to generative AI features inside Search Console settings.
  2. Check the Generative AI performance report monthly alongside standard Search performance.
  3. Track branded query volume in GA4 and Search Console; a lift after publishing AEO-focused content is one of the few reliable signals that AI-driven awareness is translating into direct search.
  4. Watch referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains in GA4, small but growing, and worth tagging separately.

Report AI’s mid-2026 index of AI search data put total AI Overview coverage in the tens of per cent of Google queries, with meaningfully lower click-through on the organic results beneath them. The exact figure moves month to month and by vertical, so treat any single number as a snapshot, not a constant, and always check your own Search Console data rather than a generic industry figure.

AEO checklist by page type

Different page types need different emphasis. Applying one blanket checklist across a whole site wastes effort on the pages that do not carry much query volume.

Page type Priority checklist items
Homepage Organization schema, clear entity statement in the first paragraph, NAP consistency
Service pages Answer-first opening, FAQ schema, comparison tables against alternatives
Product pages Product schema, real specifications, genuine review markup, fast LCP on image-heavy templates
Blog and guide content Fan-out H2 structure, FAQPage schema, authoritative external citations, author bio
Location or contact pages LocalBusiness schema, embedded map, consistent address formatting

Common mistakes that keep Gold Coast websites out of AI answers

Reviewing local competitors and client sites during Titan Blue’s Phase 2 AEO research turned up the same handful of mistakes repeatedly, none of them exotic.

  • Generic About pages with no named founders, history or address, which strips out the entity signals AI systems use to decide who is actually answering.
  • FAQ sections written as marketing copy rather than direct answers, burying the actual answer under a sales pitch before the question is ever addressed.
  • Schema plugins fighting each other, exactly like the NewsArticle override Titan Blue found on its own blog, which can silently misclassify content type across an entire site.
  • Heavy image carousels and video backgrounds with no compression, which blow out Core Web Vitals on mobile even when desktop feels fine.
  • No monitoring of AI referral traffic at all, so a site can be losing or gaining AI visibility for months with nobody noticing.

How Titan Blue builds AEO-ready websites from day one

Any agency can design a website that looks good. Titan Blue’s position, built on 25 years operating out of Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, is that a website should also be legible to the systems now doing a growing share of the recommending: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. That means the checklist above is not a post-launch audit item, it is part of the build brief from the first WordPress, WooCommerce or Shopify wireframe.

In practice that looks like planning schema types alongside the page templates, writing FAQ content as genuine direct answers rather than sales copy, and treating Core Web Vitals as a launch gate rather than a nice-to-have. Titan Blue’s own AEO web design guide sets out the full framework this checklist is drawn from, and the web design and AEO services pages cover how that gets applied to a live build.

Tools to run this checklist yourself

Each layer of the checklist has a free or low-cost tool that checks it directly, so a business does not need to guess.

Checklist layer Tool What it confirms
Crawlability Google Search Console URL Inspection Whether Googlebot can access and index a specific URL right now
robots.txt rules Google’s robots.txt Tester (in Search Console) Whether a specific bot, including AI crawlers, is blocked on a given path
Schema markup Schema Markup Validator (validator.schema.org) Whether structured data parses correctly and matches the intended type
Core Web Vitals PageSpeed Insights Real-user LCP, INP and CLS scores against Google’s published targets
Site-wide crawl issues Screaming Frog SEO Spider Broken links, duplicate titles, missing alt text and canonical conflicts across the whole site
AI visibility over time Search Console Generative AI performance report Impressions and clicks specifically attributable to AI Overviews and AI Mode

Run these in order: fix anything the URL Inspection tool or robots.txt tester flags first, since a blocked or noindexed page makes every other item irrelevant. Schema and Core Web Vitals come next, then ongoing monitoring through Search Console once the technical base is solid.

AEO web design checklist for service businesses versus ecommerce

The checklist applies to both, but the weighting shifts. A service business, such as a local tradesperson, clinic or agency, gets the most value from LocalBusiness schema, a strong About page with named staff, and FAQ content answering the specific questions a prospective client asks before booking. Location and authority signals do more work than product-level structured data because there is no product catalogue to markup.

An ecommerce site carries the opposite weighting. Product schema, review markup, and Core Web Vitals on image-heavy category and product pages matter more, because AI shopping features and AI Overviews increasingly surface specific products with price and availability rather than generic brand mentions. A WooCommerce or Shopify store that has not implemented Product schema on every listing is leaving a meaningful gap in how AI-driven shopping assistants can represent it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SEO and AEO in web design?

AEO builds on standard SEO rather than replacing it. Google treats AI Overviews and AI Mode as features of the same Search index, so a technically sound, well-structured SEO build is the foundation AEO sits on top of, not a separate system.

Does a website need llms.txt or a special AI file to be cited?

No. Google’s official guidance does not include llms.txt, content chunking or AI-specific rewriting as effective techniques for Google Search. Time is better spent on crawlability, structure and schema, which are proven to matter.

How long does it take to make an existing website AEO-ready?

A technical and content audit against this checklist typically takes one to two weeks, followed by a staged rollout of fixes: schema and crawlability issues first, then content restructuring, then ongoing monitoring. A full rebuild is a longer project, but most sites do not need one to become AEO-ready.

Can WordPress and Shopify sites both be AEO-ready?

Yes. Both platforms support the schema, sitemap and performance requirements on this checklist, either natively or through plugins such as RankMath. The checklist items are platform-agnostic; what matters is whether they are actually implemented and verified on the live site.

Does adding FAQ schema guarantee an AI Overview citation?

No single item guarantees a citation. FAQ schema makes a page’s Q&A content easier to parse, which improves the odds, but AI systems weigh crawlability, content quality, authority and technical performance together before selecting a source.

How do I check if my website is already AI-ready?

Start with Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report to see current AI Overview impressions, then work through the crawlability, schema and Core Web Vitals sections of this checklist manually, or run a structured audit such as Titan Blue’s AI Ready Check.

Should every page on a website meet this full checklist?

No. Prioritise by page type and query volume, as set out above. Homepages, core service pages and high-traffic blog content should meet every item; low-traffic utility pages need the technical basics but not the full content and authority treatment.
