ChatGPT GPT-6 Search Upgrade: What It Means for Australia

AI Search News | Australia | 10 October 2026

Last updated:

OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to ChatGPT on 7 October 2026, with a faster, more reliable web search that decides for itself when to look things up. For Australian businesses the implication is simple: the AI now doing the searching is quicker and more selective, so clear, easily confirmed information gives a business a better chance of being cited.

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 to ChatGPT on 7 October 2026, used by over 1.2 billion people weekly.
  • GPT-6 Instant starts answering search queries 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, OpenAI says.
  • GPT-6 decides for itself when to search, and OpenAI says it more reliably finds information that supports its answer.
  • OpenAI did not name Australia specifically, describing a global rollout for paid tiers and next-day access for Free and Go users.
  • In a sample Google AI Mode check across Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, vague prompts often routed customers to directories rather than naming businesses.

What happened

On 7 October 2026, OpenAI announced that GPT-6 is rolling out to ChatGPT, which it says is used by more than 1.2 billion people each week (OpenAI announcement, also published at openai.com). Paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise) get GPT-6 Sol in the Chat tab from that day. Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna from the following day. OpenAI says the release changes Chat only, not the models in Work and Codex.

Three claims in the announcement matter for search:

  • Faster search. OpenAI says that when a search is needed, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant.
  • Better judgement about when to search. OpenAI says GPT-6 is better at deciding when it needs to search and more reliably finds information that actually supports its answer.
  • More honesty about gaps. OpenAI says the model is better at recognising and explaining when it lacks the information or tools to answer.

The performance figures come from OpenAI’s own internal evaluations, not independent testing. We have not verified them.

44% sooner is how much faster OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering search queries than GPT-5.6 Instant, on average (OpenAI, October 2026, source).

Is it live in Australia?

OpenAI says paid tiers receive GPT-6 “globally” and that Free and Go users follow the next day. The announcement does not name Australia or any other country, and it does not say whether any feature is held back by region. Admin settings can also affect Enterprise availability. So the honest answer is that a global rollout was announced and Australia was not singled out. Check which model your own ChatGPT account is using before you assume anything.

What we saw in Australian AI search this week

We cannot test ChatGPT’s new model on demand, and we do not claim to. What we can do is look at how AI search answers a plain buying prompt in Australian cities. On 9 October 2026 we asked Google AI Mode one query per city: “best local services in [city]”. This is a sample of three answers, not a study.

City Businesses named Signals quoted
Melbourne None. The answer named marketplaces: hipages, Airtasker, Oneflare and Service.com.au No ratings or review counts quoted. It described what each platform is for
Brisbane None. The answer named Airtasker, Hipages, My Community Directory, Brisbane Small Business Directory and MyCity Directory No ratings quoted. It pointed to reviews, licence checks and star ratings on those platforms
Perth Seven: Perth Trade Services, Streamlined Electrical Services, Inspired Managed IT Services, CBM Corporate, Pentanet, Innogreen and Healing Hands Remedial Clinic Descriptive praise such as rapid response times and “top-rated”, with suburbs given. No numeric ratings or review counts quoted

Two of the three answers handed the customer to directories and marketplaces rather than naming a business, and all three ended by asking what specific service we wanted. Perth’s answer named businesses, but only because it guessed at categories. The pattern is that vague prompts send traffic to platforms, while specific prompts are where individual businesses win or lose.

What it means for Australian businesses

This is our view, not OpenAI’s. A search tool that decides when to search, and checks that sources support its answer, rewards businesses whose facts are easy to confirm. That applies from a Sydney accountancy to a Perth electrician to a regional Victorian winery.

  • Sydney and Melbourne: crowded categories mean the assistant has many candidates. The ones it can verify on a business’s own website, listings and reviews are the ones it can safely name.
  • Brisbane and Adelaide: mid-sized markets where a handful of well documented businesses can own a category in AI answers, as long as their service pages say plainly what they do and where.
  • Perth: in our sample, the answer named specific suburbs and services. Clear location and service detail on your site is what makes that possible.
  • Regional Australia: fewer competitors, but also thinner online information. A business with complete, consistent details can stand out quickly.

A faster model also means fewer chances for the user to wander. If the first answer names three businesses, most people will not scroll past it. That is why we treat this as an answer engine optimisation issue rather than a ranking issue.

Is ChatGPT’s new search able to verify your business?

With GPT-6 checking whether sources actually support an answer, unclear websites get skipped. Our Free AI Readiness Check shows what AI assistants can and cannot confirm about your business, in plain English.

What to do now

  1. Test your own prompts. Ask ChatGPT and Google AI Mode the way a customer would, with your service and your suburb. Note who is named and what is quoted.
  2. Make every key fact explicit on your site. Services, service areas, opening hours, licences and contact details should be stated in plain text, not buried in images or PDFs.
  3. Keep listings consistent. Your Google Business Profile, directories and website should agree on name, address, phone and services.
  4. Collect recent, specific reviews. Assistants lean on third-party confirmation, and reviews that name the service and suburb help.
  5. Be present on the marketplaces your category uses. Our sample shows AI Mode routing vague prompts to hipages, Airtasker and similar platforms.
  6. Read our guides. Start with generative engine optimisation and the AEO friendly website architecture guide, and follow the AI Search News hub.
