An AI readiness check is an audit that tests whether AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity can reach your website, understand what your business does and trust it enough to quote or recommend it. It looks at five things: whether crawlers are allowed in, whether your pages can be read without scripts, whether structured data matches the visible page, whether your business is described consistently, and whether other sources back up your claims. Titan Blue’s Website AI Readiness service starts with that audit, and our free AI Search Scanner gives you an instant first read.
This guide explains what the check covers, what a good one looks like, who needs it and how the work runs. It also includes a live audit of eleven pages on our own website, with the less flattering results left in, because an article about readiness should show its working.
Key Takeaways
- An AI readiness check tests access, readability, structured data, entity clarity and external proof. It is a diagnosis, not a guarantee of being recommended.
- Google’s own documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The foundation is a crawlable, indexed, helpful page, which is exactly what the check verifies.
- Most failures are mundane: a blocked crawler, key content that only appears after scripts run, structured data that disagrees with the page, or a vague description of what the business does.
- We audited 11 of our own pages for this guide. All 11 passed the access basics, and the audit still found two pages with two H1 headings and five pages without FAQ markup.
- The free AI Search Scanner is the lowest-friction first step. A manual audit from our team goes deeper and ends in a prioritised fix list.

What Is an AI Readiness Check?
An AI readiness check is a structured review of how a website looks to the machines that now answer questions on behalf of your customers. Instead of asking “does this page look good?”, it asks “can a crawler fetch this, can a language model summarise it correctly, and is there evidence to justify naming this business?”
The check matters because buyers increasingly ask an AI engine a full question, such as “which accountant in Perth handles farm businesses?”, and receive a short list rather than ten blue links. Being on that list depends on the same fundamentals that have always supported search, applied with more rigour to clarity and proof.
It is different from a standard SEO audit in emphasis. An SEO audit leans on rankings, keywords and links. An AI readiness check adds questions about extractability (can a single section be lifted out as an answer?), entity consistency (does every page describe the business the same way?) and corroboration (do third-party sources agree with you?). If you want the wider strategy behind it, read our guides to AEO services in Australia and AEO web design.
What Does an AI Readiness Audit Check?
A thorough AI readiness audit checks eight areas, and each one maps to a reason an engine might skip or misread your site. This is the checklist we work through, in the order problems usually appear.
| Check | What we look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Crawler access | robots.txt rules for search and AI user agents, server responses, firewall or bot-protection blocks | A page that cannot be fetched cannot be quoted |
| 2. Indexability | Canonical tags, noindex directives, sitemap coverage, redirect chains | Google states a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI features |
| 3. Readable without scripts | Whether headings, answers and contact details exist in the raw HTML, not only after JavaScript runs | Some crawlers read the initial HTML only |
| 4. Page structure | One H1, logical H2 and H3 hierarchy, short answer-first paragraphs, tables and lists | Clear sections can be lifted out as standalone answers |
| 5. Structured data | JSON-LD for Organization, LocalBusiness or Service that matches the visible page, plus valid syntax | Gives engines an unambiguous statement of who you are and what you sell |
| 6. Entity clarity | Name, address, phone, services and service area stated identically across the site, profiles and directories | Inconsistent details make an engine less certain it has the right business |
| 7. Citations and proof | Reviews, case studies, mentions on other credible sites, author and company credentials | Engines look for corroboration before naming a supplier |
| 8. Speed and stability | Core Web Vitals, heavy scripts, timeouts, uptime | Slow or failing pages get skipped or fetched incompletely |
Notice what is not on the list: magic files or special tricks. Google’s documentation on AI features and your website is explicit that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. The check is the discipline of verifying those basics, not a hunt for a secret switch.
How Do You Know If Your Website Is AI Ready?
The quickest way to know is to run a free scan, then confirm the result with a few manual checks you can do in ten minutes. A scanner reads your page the way a crawler does and flags obvious gaps; a human review explains which gaps matter for your business.
Try these five checks yourself:
- Open your robots.txt (yourdomain.com.au/robots.txt) and look for blanket disallow rules or rules aimed at specific crawlers you did not intend to block.
- View the page source and search for your main heading and your phone number. If they are missing from the raw HTML, a crawler that does not run scripts will not see them.
- Search the source for “ld+json”. If nothing appears, you have no structured data. If something appears, check that the name, address and services match what visitors read.
- Ask an AI engine a real customer question about your trade and suburb, then see whether you are named and what it quotes. One query is an anecdote, not a measurement, so repeat it over a few weeks.
- Run the free AI Search Scanner for a scored read across crawler access, structured data, content clarity, signals and speed, with the findings listed.
If two or more of those checks surface problems, a manual audit is worth booking. It turns a list of symptoms into a ranked plan.
What We Found When We Audited Our Own Website
We ran the same checks on titanblue.com.au before writing this section. On 5 November 2026 we fetched 11 of our own pages with a standard browser user agent: the home page, five service pages, the About, Contact and Reviews pages, and two recent blog posts. The results are below, including the awkward ones.
| Check | Result across 11 pages | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Page loads | 11 of 11 returned a normal 200 response | Crawlers can fetch every page we tested |
| Indexable and canonical | 11 of 11 had a canonical tag and an index, follow robots meta | Nothing in the sample was blocked from indexing by directive |
| Readable HTML | All 11 had visible text in the raw HTML, from 880 words (Contact) to 4,351 words | Content does not depend on scripts to appear |
| Structured data | 11 of 11 carried JSON-LD, including Organization, LocalBusiness and Service types | Business identity is stated in machine-readable form |
| FAQ markup | 6 of 11 carried FAQ markup, including the SEO and care plans pages, but not the AI readiness service page itself | A gap on the very service this article is about |
| Heading structure | 9 of 11 had a single H1. Two pages (the home page and the care plans page) had two | Our own audit would flag these for cleanup |
| robots.txt | Explicitly allows 13 named search and AI user agents | Access is deliberate, not accidental |
| llms.txt | A file exists, around 15,000 characters | Present, but see the note below |
Two honest observations. First, a site that does the basics well can still have housekeeping to fix: duplicate H1s and uneven FAQ coverage are the sort of findings a manual audit exists to catch. Second, we have an llms.txt file because it costs little, but Google’s documentation does not list one as a requirement, so we treat it as optional rather than a ranking lever. Fix the fundamentals first.
This was a sample of 11 pages from one site on one day, so treat it as a demonstration of the method, not a benchmark of how Australian websites perform.
What Separates a Good AI Readiness Provider From a Poor One?
A good provider shows you evidence from your own site and ties every recommendation to a fundamental, while a poor one sells a proprietary score or a special file as the answer. Use these criteria when comparing audits, whether from us or anyone else.
- Evidence from your pages. You should see the actual robots rules, headings and markup found, not a generic percentage with no explanation.
- Official guidance as the baseline. Recommendations should line up with Google Search Central documentation and schema.org definitions, not folklore.
- No guaranteed placements. Nobody controls what an AI engine says. Be wary of anyone promising to make ChatGPT recommend you.
- A prioritised list. Forty findings without an order are noise. You want the three fixes that matter first.
- Honest about what is not measurable. Good providers say “one query, one day” about AI answer tests rather than presenting an anecdote as a study.
- Fixes that serve humans too. Clearer headings, faster pages and consistent details help visitors, not only machines.
- You keep everything. The report, the changes and the site belong to you.

How Does AI Readiness Relate to Structured Data and Entity Clarity?
Structured data and entity clarity are the two checks where most small business sites quietly lose points, because they are invisible to visitors. Structured data is a block of JSON-LD that states facts in a format machines read directly. Entity clarity is the consistency of those facts everywhere your business appears.
Google’s introduction to structured data explains that markup helps its systems understand page content, and its guidelines require that markup reflect what users can actually see. That second rule is the one we check hardest: markup claiming opening hours, services or ratings that the page does not show is a liability, not an asset.
For a typical Australian small business we look for an Organization or LocalBusiness block with the right name, address, phone and service area, Service markup describing what you sell, and consistent wording of those same details on the About page, Contact page, Google Business Profile and key directories. If you are a plumber in Adelaide, a dental practice in Brisbane or an online store shipping from Melbourne, the principle is identical.

Who Benefits From an AI Readiness Check, and Who Does Not?
An AI readiness check benefits businesses that win work through search and referrals and have a website that has not been reviewed since AI answers arrived. It is less useful for others, and we would rather say so up front.
It suits
- Service businesses such as trades, clinics, accountants, lawyers and agencies, where buyers ask “who should I use?” questions.
- Online stores on WooCommerce or Shopify whose product pages need clean markup and readable descriptions.
- Sites that rank on Google but get few enquiries, where something between the result and the contact form is failing.
- Businesses that have just redesigned and want to confirm nothing was lost in the rebuild.
- Multi-location operators who need consistent details across several suburbs or cities.
It is less useful for
- A brand-new site with no content yet. Build the substance first, then audit it.
- Businesses that never rely on online discovery, such as those running purely on repeat contracts.
- Anyone expecting a score to replace content, reviews and reputation. The check finds blockers; it does not create authority.
What Are the Benefits for Australian Businesses?
The benefit of an AI readiness check is that it removes the avoidable reasons a search or AI engine might ignore you, and it does so across Google and AI answer engines at once. Because the fixes are the fundamentals, they pay off in classic search as well.
- Fewer silent failures. A blocked crawler or an unreadable page is found and fixed instead of costing you visibility for months.
- A clearer description of your business. When your pages state who you serve, where and how, an engine is less likely to misdescribe you.
- Better use of existing content. Restructuring good pages into answer-first sections often gains more than writing new ones.
- A baseline you can track. You can repeat the check after changes and see what moved.
- A shared language with your web team. The report gives developers and marketers the same list.
The strongest proof of the underlying approach is in our published results. Our QLD Honey & Hives case study records organic clicks growing from 23 to 400+ a month, page 5 to page 1 and online orders up 162%. CarbonHalo went from 5 to 300+ organic clicks a month, and Mad Over Italian from 368 to 2,767 organic clicks a month. These are SEO and AEO results built on clear structure and content, not outcomes of the audit alone, and you can read the Google reviews on our reviews page.
How Does the AI Readiness Check Work With Titan Blue?
Our process has five steps and starts with the free scanner. Each step has a clear output, so you always know what you are getting before you commit to the next one.
- Free scan. You enter your URL into the AI Search Scanner and receive an instant demo score with findings.
- Manual audit. We review your robots rules, raw HTML, headings, structured data, entity details and proof, using a browser user agent and your live pages.
- Prioritised report. You receive a ranked list in plain English: what is wrong, why it matters, how hard it is to fix.
- Fix plan. We scope the work to your site and quote it to scope. You can have us do it, hand it to your developer, or do it yourself.
- Re-check. After the fixes go live we run the checks again so you can see the change.
| Stage | What you get | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|
| Free scan | Instant demo score and findings | Under a minute |
| Manual audit | Review of your live pages against the eight checks | Within days of enquiry |
| Prioritised report | Ranked fix list in plain English | Delivered with the audit |
| Fix plan and delivery | Scoped work, quoted to scope | Depends on the size of your site |
| Re-check | Repeat of the checks after changes go live | After fixes are published |
Our approach to the fix stage is described on the AI readiness service page: direct answers that can be quoted, service pages that act as the source of truth, and a content framework built around real customer questions.

Which Services Work Best With an AI Readiness Check?
The check finds the problems; three related services fix and build on them, and the combination works better than any single one. Think of the audit as the diagnosis and these as the treatment.
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)
AEO restructures and writes content so it can be lifted out as a direct answer. Once the audit shows which pages are unclear or unquotable, our AEO service rebuilds them with answer-first openings, fan-out sections and consistent entity details.
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)
GEO focuses on how your brand is described across the wider web, which is where the citations and proof check points. Our GEO service builds the third-party corroboration that makes an engine confident naming you.
AEO Web Design
If the audit shows the problem is structural, such as a theme that hides content behind scripts or a layout with scrambled text, the cleanest fix is a build designed for it. Our AEO web design approach and our website design service build those foundations in from the start.
Together the three cover the full loop: find what is broken, make the content quotable, and make the brand verifiable elsewhere. Done alone, each leaves a gap. An audit without fixes is a report in a drawer, and content written for answer engines on a site they cannot crawl is wasted.

Why Check Your AI Readiness Now?
The reason to check now is that the way buyers find suppliers is changing while many competitor sites have not been looked at, and the cost of checking is low. Google states that its AI features are part of Search, so the same pages that serve Google results feed them.
Google’s documentation states: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” Source: Google Search Central, AI features and your website, retrieved 5 November 2026.
Read that two ways. The good news is that no secret formula separates you from visibility. The practical news is that the foundations must actually be in place: the page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can be a supporting link in an AI answer. A quiet technical block, such as an overzealous firewall rule or a stray noindex, is invisible to you and decisive for the engine.
Fixes also compound. Content that is clear, consistent and corroborated keeps working as engines change, and each month of delay is a month a competitor’s cleaner site can be the one being quoted. We make no claim of deadlines or limited spots. The honest case is simpler: a free scan costs nothing, takes a minute and tells you whether there is anything to fix. You can start with the scanner or contact us and we will tell you plainly whether a full audit is worth it for your site.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI readiness check?
It is an audit that tests whether AI answer engines can access your website, read it, understand your business and find enough evidence to recommend you. It covers crawler access, indexability, page structure, structured data, entity consistency, external proof and speed.
Is the AI Search Scanner really free?
Yes. You enter your URL and get an instant demo score with findings. A full manual audit from our team goes deeper and is quoted to scope.
How much does an AI readiness audit cost?
The scanner is free. A manual audit and any resulting fix work are quoted to scope after we look at your site, so we can say what is actually needed before you commit.
Will an AI readiness check get me recommended by ChatGPT or Google?
It removes avoidable blockers and clarifies your content, but no provider can guarantee a recommendation. Engines choose based on many signals, including your reputation and the quality of competing sources.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Google’s documentation does not list one as a requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It can be added at low cost, but it is secondary to crawlable, indexed, well-structured pages.
How long does the check take?
The free scan takes under a minute. A manual audit is delivered within days of enquiry, and the timing of fixes depends on the size of your site and what the audit finds.
Is an AI readiness check different from an SEO audit?
It overlaps heavily, because the fundamentals are shared. The AI readiness check adds extra attention to extractable answers, entity consistency and external corroboration.
Can you check a site that Titan Blue did not build?
Yes. The audit works from your live pages, whatever platform they run on, including WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify.
